- Planting: March is a great time to plant a variety of vegetables and herbs in Houston. Consider planting tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, squash, beans, and herbs like basil, cilantro, and parsley. You can also plant flowers such as marigolds, zinnias, and petunias.
- Pruning: Now is the time to prune while we have cooler weather! Prune any of your woody shrubs or trees right now to encourage new growth. Flowering plants should be pruned regularly to promote new bloom growth
- Weeding: If you have consistently had weeds in your garden, its time to amend the soil! Apply humic acid or Humates Plus by Microlife to create a richer soil that will not be hospitable to new weeds. Apply pre-emergent herbicide to new garden beds, we recommend Hi-yield Dimension!
- Soil Care: Re-mineralize your soil with AZOMITE & add microbial life with compost! This will help with water retention & weeds for the remainder of the year! Apply a layer of mulch around your plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize your garden beds with a balanced fertilizer to provide essential nutrients for healthy plant growth. We recommend Nelson’s fertilizer, because of their wide variety of individualized plant fertilizers. Don’t forget to bring back your container for $5 off!
- Watering: Monitor the moisture levels in your garden and water plants as needed. We’ve received lots of rain this month, so make sure not to over water!
- Pest Control: Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids, caterpillars, and snails. Use appropriate pest control methods, such as insecticidal soap or organic pesticides, to manage pest infestations.
By staying on top of these tasks, you can enjoy a productive and beautiful garden throughout the spring and summer months in Houston.
