Our Story

Family-owned, Gulf Coast grown

Jimbo’s Nursery is a second-generation, family-owned garden center that’s served Santa Fe and Galveston County for more than 50 years. Across five greenhouses, we grow everything from native perennials to one of the largest bromeliad collections in Texas, with a knowledgeable team on hand to help you find what will actually thrive in a Gulf Coast garden.

1975

A Backyard Beginning

Jimmy Woolsey founded Jimbo’s Nursery by trucking plants in from his mother’s nursery in the Rio Grande Valley and selling them door to door to local florists throughout the Houston area.

1983

Putting Down Roots

After the market crash makes trucking unsustainable, he purchases land in Santa Fe and builds the first greenhouse—establishing Jimbo’s as a permanent nursery.

2000

A Passion for Bromeliads

As Jimmy became more interested in bromeliads, he began building a collection that eventually grew into one of the largest bromeliad operations in Texas, with an entire greenhouse dedicated to growing them.

2021

Expanding the Vision

In 2021, Jimmy’s daughter Claire joined the nursery, bringing the next generation into the family business. She works alongside business partner Anita, whose background in farming adds hands-on growing experience to the team. Together, they’ve expanded Jimbo’s social media presence, events, plant selection, and community-focused offerings.

Today

Growing Forward

Today, Jimbo’s continues to grow as a family-owned nursery, offering a wider selection of plants, hands-on workshops, community events, and personalized garden services for customers of all ages.

This is our most colorful and tropical greenhouse, where Jimbo’s bromeliad specialty really shines. We primarily grow Aechmea, Neoregelia, and Billbergia, along with air plants (Tillandsia), one of the largest bromeliad collections in Texas, all under one roof.

Cactus & Succulent Greenhouse

Cactus & Succulent Greenhouse

Our cactus and succulent greenhouse is built for collectors. Alongside easy, low-water varieties perfect for Gulf Coast landscaping, we stock a wide variety of rare and unusual collector specimens you won’t see at your average garden center.

Native Perennials

Native Perennials

We grow a wide selection of native perennials suited to the Gulf Coast, with a strong focus on milkweed and other low-water-need plants. These are the natives that thrive here with minimal fuss, and milkweed in particular gives your garden a real role in supporting monarch butterflies on their migration.
